Regional produce from the Schlattgut – offering a genuine farm experience

Hello and a warm welcome to Schlattgut farm in Herrliberg! I’m Domenik Ledergerber and, since 2019, I’ve been running the farm with my brother Andrin in the third generation, with the active support of our parents and partners. As a farmer, seasonal and regional cuisine is very important to me. In particular, you can only get the best products if you use the best ingredients. Do you make sure to use regional and seasonal produce when cooking and baking? In this article, you are provided with good reasons for filling your shopping basket with such food in future.

Why buy directly from the farmer?

Freshly harvested foods arrive on your plate directly from the field and taste delicious.
Regional produce is environmentally friendly, since no long-distance transport is required.
You know where your food comes from. Get to know your farming family and ask them everything you want to know about its production.
You support your producer directly, since no retailers are involved.
Discover specialities. A number of products are not available in retail stores – perhaps you will find a delightful small gift among them.
Make your shopping trip into an experience for the entire family and visit a farm with a petting zoo or a stable that you can look round.

Labels and programmes

Swiss farmers are required to meet strict conditions in order to receive direct payments. Many farming families voluntarily participate in other programmes and produce label products.

Tips and tricks for fresh produce

Asparagus freshness test

Do you want to test asparagus to see if it’s fresh? Rub two asparagus spears together. If they squeak, they’re perfect.

Storing potatoes

Potatoes should be stored in the dark (e.g. in a cellar or crate) and in a dry environment (storage temperature of 6 to 10°C). They’re best kept inside a linen bag or a wooden box.

Pumpkin tapping test

You can tell whether a pumpkin is ripe or not by performing the «tapping test». Pumpkins that sound hollow and dull taste best!

Storing apples

You shouldn’t store applies in the fridge or next to other foods. Always eat larger applies first, since they will soften more rapidly.
